Final Blog

1. How have you changed as a person after studying abroad?
As a person I am more aware of how different it is to actually go somewhere and experience everyday life than to simply talk about it in the U.S. . It is so difficult to put things in words but this whole experience made me more appreciative of everything. It also made me want to travel everywhere!
2. What self-discovery surprised you?
It surprised me that I was not homesick at all while I was away. I thought for sure that I would miss my family the first day I arrived. But I did not experience any culture shock either.
3. If you took courses in your major; how has studying abroad impacted your understanding of your major?
I am a nursing major and was unable to take courses regarding my major. But, I shadowed doctor's and nurses everyday in the maternity ward and learned so much. I shadowed them as part of my research project for the program. But, I also helped them by doing various things such as taking BP's during rounds.
4. Single greatest benefit of studying abroad?
Meeting so many wonderful people.
5. How did your life goals change?
I am addicted to traveling. I am now considering being a traveling nurse when I'm finished with school. If I had money and time to spare I would also love to take a year to just travel around the world.
6. What was your favorite experience?
I had so many great experiences but my favorite experience was being in the hospital and seeing how different things are done based on what they have available. I loved learning from the doctors and nurses.
7. Any advice for future participants?
My only advice for future participants is to be organized while you are organizing your trip. There is alot to do and the program is alot of work. But the experience is completely worth it. Everyone you work to from Carlow's global learning center, Pitt's study abroad office, and the professors are extremely nice. Do not get overwhelmed with how much needs to be done before you leave, the trip is amazing and you can do a safari afterwards if you want which was also so worth it! I would be more than happy to answer any questions that any future participants might have!
8. Would you study abroad again?   Why?
I would definitely study abroad again! There is so much to see in the world that is not the same as watching it on television. For example we had a long layover in London on our way to Entebbe so we got basically a whole day to explore. To be honest I wasn't super excited about London but now I am in love with it. If I was going to study abroad again I'm not sure where I would choose to go but each place is amazing and I wish I could go everywhere!
